Are you aware there is a way YOU learn?

There is a way you learn best.

There is a way that learning sticks for you.

There is a way that learning translates to performance and result for you.

If there is a way, shouldn’t you use it every time.

Do you know the WAY YOU LEARN BEST?

The way is called YOUR LEARNING STYLE.

The Learning Style concept was made popular by the work of Neil Fleming’s VARK Model in 1987.

Neil Flemning Model explored the Visual, Auditory, Reading/Writing & Kinesthetic learning styles based on four sensory modalities.

More recently, learning style models has been expanded to seven styles which includes:

  • Visual
  • Auditory
  • Logical
  • Kinesthetic
  • Verbal or Linguistic
  • Social or Interpersonal
  • Solitary or Intrapersonal
  • Let’s take a deep dive into each of these learning style:

Visual Learners learn best by seeing. Information presented in visual formats like charts, graphs, infographic, animations and videos are retained and understood better by these type of learners. Visual learners also love to read books and texts.

“Every child has a different learning style and pace. Each child is unique, not only capable of learning but also capable of succeeding.”-Robert John Meehan

Auditory Learners learn best by what they hear through sounds and rhythm. Lectures, songs, reading aloud, podcasts or recordings are ways information can be presented to these learners. Mnemonics, music and rhythms enhance retention for this learner.

Logical Learners learn best understanding the ‘whys’ of a concept. They think in systems, patterns using reasoning and logic. A logical learner wants to connect ideas, understand key concepts and look at ideas from the ‘big picture’ frame.

Kinesthetic Learners learn best by touching and doing. It is about the hands-on experience for these learners. They want to learn the concepts by applying, practicing and experimenting by handling the objects.

Verbal or Linguistic Learners learn in words. These learner picture the words as they take advantage of their auditory skills. Explaining, storytelling and language analysis helps this learner. Verbal roleplays will help this learner.

“Trainings help individuals find their unique voices in the learning process. We all have our strengths, our weaknesses, our styles of learning, our personalities. Developing introspective sensitivity to these issues is critical to long-term success.” -Joshua Waitzkin

Social or Interpersonal Learners have the ability to relate and understand other people- understanding their feelings and motivations. This learner learns best in groups maximizing multiple perspectives and inferences of other people. Such a learner can maximize group sessions, group discussion, learning from the actions and mistakes of others as well as by observing other people.

Solitary or Intrapersonal Learners learn best on their own through introspections and self reflect. They are aware of their own feelings, desires, strengths and weaknesses. Learning for these people is maximized by private study time, alignment of learning objective to personal values, journaling and personal practice.

While we have explored these seven models, individuals usually have more than one learning style that could be complementary or situational.

As a learner, it is of immense benefit to know your learning styles and what works best for you so you can maximize your learning experience.

My challenge to you isĀ WHAT IS YOUR LEARNING STYLE? HOW BEST DO YOU LEARN?
